The Marriott-run Gaylord Opryland resort in Nashville was faced with a dilemma. A fleet of 737s and 777s are definitely in line for an upgrade, now that the Federal Aviation Administration has ordered airlines to replace their cockpits' displays with ones not vulnerable to WiFi signals. Let's go back a few years to understand what's going on here. See, back when the use of wireless internet aboard airplanes was only just starting to take off , Boeing conducted a test , which discovered that WiFi signals affected 737 and 777 cockpit displays. These screens, which showed pilots important flight data such as altitude and airspeed, flickered and even blanked out completely in the presence of WiFi. In one particular bad test run, the screen remained blank for a full six minutes.
While that's obviously not ideal, all the outages happened on the ground and only once during last year's round of testing. So Honeywell (the displays' maker) and Boeing just advised airlines to take their planes in and have those screens replaced giffgaff -- an action the FAA was content with back in 2012. (To note, Boeing has started fitting planes built in September 2012 and beyond with updated displays.) Now the FAA is changing giffgaff its tune, and Honeywell wants to know what has changed since then that has compelled the agency to make the upgrade mandatory.
We're guessing it's because airlines are becoming more and more open to the use of WiFi devices onboard , not just by passengers, but also by the flight crew itself, and that has raised safety concerns. After all, six minutes of outage could be fatal when you're thousands of feet up in the air. It's unclear how many airplanes will be affected by the mandate at the moment. According to Reuters , though, around 1,300 US planes will have to be refitted with the new screens within the next five years. Wi-Fi Calling lets you make calls and send texts over the internet...
Wi-Fi Calling is the conventional name for a technology that allows cellular packets from your phone to be transferred to your carrier over the internet, and injected back into the cellular network as if they'd been beamed over the air.
Unlike services like Google Hangouts and Skype, which let you talk to other people using call forwarding or an internet-based interface, Wi-Fi Calling lets you use your actual carrier phone number over the internet. Wi-Fi Calling is also distinct from VoIP technology, which lets you use an internet-connected phone exactly as you would a landline. Of all the things you'd think could save HTC 's fortunes, an action camera which looks like a tiny submarine periscope probably isn't the first thing to jump to mind, but the company's hopes are high for the HTC RE . The stubby WiFi-enabled camera borrows ideas both from smartphone photography and more specialist shooters s4 like GoPro, with a 16-megapixel sensor, Full HD video recording, and automatic clip curation using HTC Zoe. Most curious of all, it's not just for HTC's own phones: the RE will work with Android devices and iPhones in general. Read on for some first impressions. s4
It's certainly distinctive. A curved tube 96.7 mm tall and 26.5 mm in diameter, it's a pocket-friendly 65.5 grams and made of tough plastic. Water and dust proof, too, to IP57, as well as meeting IPx7 for the body and IPx8 if you put on the cap.
The twisted s4 shape fits the hand neatly, with a grip sensor automatically powering s4 the RE on. Controls s4 are limited to a big silver button that falls under your thumb: tap it to snap a photo; hold it down to start recording video.
You don't get any integrated way to accurately frame the shot, since there's no screen or even a viewfinder, but the 146-degree f/2.8 lens means you're more likely than not to capture s4 what you were interested in. HTC has built in support for its Zoe app - available for Android now, and for iPhone later in the year - which will automagically curate highlight videos from stills and footage recorded s4 with RE, and then upload them all into the cloud.
HTC insists to me that the RE isn't a direct GoPro competitor, but like the popular action camera there are a wide range of accessories and mounts to suit sports and other purposes. A 1/4-inch tripod screw is on the bottom, and HTC will have a handlebar mount, a headband mount, lanyards and neck-straps, a snap-on clip, and a windshield suction mount.
It's a pretty comprehensive range of accessories, though it might be the power add-ons that you find yourself reaching for most often, I fear. HTC says the non-removable 820 mAh battery is good for up to 1 hour and 40 minutes of Full HD video recording or 1,200 16-megapixel stills; based on my early use, I think 1 hour 25 minutes at most is a more realistic s4 estimate. It's worth noting that RE got surprisingly hot in my hand during that period, too.
A desktop charging station - with a flared base to keep it extra-stable - is one option, plugging into the microUSB port on the bottom of the camera. Even cleverer is the power extension s4 bar, which doubles as a regular portable battery or, with the USB cap removed, screws onto the bottom of the RE and juices it directly.
Image quality is more in line with a GoPro than a smartphone camera, too. It's about what you could expect from a fixed-focus lens, namely on a par for a point-and-shoot but unlikely s4 to challenge anything more serious. The companion app does a solid job of ironing out the fish-eye effect of the ultra-wide-angle lens, too. Unfortunately a corrupted memory card means I can't share my samples now, but we'll have more for the full RE review.
It's an interesting approach for HTC (even if you ignore the fact that there's no UltraPixel to be found, despite that being the company's photography "halo" brand), making a companion camera that can be used not only with Android devices from other firms, but even an iPhone or iPad.
The company's ambitions don't end there, s4 either. Real-time streaming to YouTube is in the pipeline, while an open API/SDK will mean social s4 networks like Tencent and Instagram will be able to build in support, too, if they see fit.
The challenge, then, is convincing enough people that they want to devote separate pocket space to a second camera, and it may only be when the streaming functionality gets fleshed s4 out that the HTC RE truly shows its worth.

If you were hoping that iOS 8's ability to hide your device ID from nearby WiFi networks would render you invisible to nosy hotspot operators, you'll dex want to dial back your expectations a bit. AirTight Networks' Bhupinder Misra has found that Apple's hardware address randomization only kicks in under a very narrow set of circumstances. You not only have to put your device to sleep and turn off location services, you have to turn off cellular data as well -- in short, your iPhone has to become a paperweight. Even then, the masking only appears to work with iOS devices using at least an A7 processor, like the iPhone 5s. As such, it's business as usual for institutions and stores that want to track your phone for the sake of stats and marketing. The only way to avoid giving out your hardware's real ID is to... well, stop using your hardware. The risk of revealing anything truly personal is relatively slim, but you're not going to be happy if you were hoping to go incognito dex around public WiFi access points. Not that companies would necessarily be deterred even if the location privacy feature was more useful. As AirTight's Hemant Chaskar notes to The Verge , it's possible for those monitoring WiFi data to toss out fake device info. Although they won't get a complete view of the people wandering near their networks, they can still make use of whatever data is left.

iOS 8 comes with a ton of new features and improvements, but sadly, it also is very buggy, and has a lot of issues . One of the issues people are facing after updating their iPhone or iPad to iOS 8 is Wi-Fi connectivity problems spongebob . Here are a few tips to fix these problems.
Many users have reported that they’ve solved their issues by disabling Wi-Fi Networking under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. This only relates to your location being used for Wi-Fi Networking, spongebob so it doesn’t disable Wi-Fi entirely.
Most networking related issues I’ve experienced have been fixed after resetting network settings. Resetting these settings flushes caches and clears DHCP settings and other networking related info. If none of these tips fix your issues, the last resort is to restore your iPhone or iPad via iTunes, and set it up as a new device. I attributed my networking issues to a hardware malfunction as a result of the impacts, but when her Wifi was throwing an error that it could not scan networks spongebob when I was attempting to manually enter the connection details, I went looking.

You also rely on the device you're trying to connect being able to display the characters.
I picked a Unicode string of " " but you, of course, can choose one which matches the TV show a little more closely - assuming you can find the right characters in the ever expanding Unicode set .

It's because for the most part computer's aren't designed to handle unicode in the SSID. A ways back there was a "prank" where you would do the same thing and it would crash mac's like crazy because they would try to display the unprotected network's SSID then crash because they couldn't. friv 3 Ubuntu, friv 3 on the other hand, shows it just fine. This is a great idea - especially good as April Fools' is just around the corner. The only problem I have is that my router translates the symbols into things like "&#9491", and won't allow other devices to see it while scanning for Wi-Fi networks, unless they're using a wired connection. any ideas on why this happens? I have a Belkin 54g router, with firmware (my router admin page only links to firmware?) version 7.00.23, which is the not the latest version - when I try to upgrade to 7.00.24, it doesn't do anything and stays at '.23. The only thing I'm particularly wondering about is why it won't let devices connect when you change the SSID, but if you could help with both that and changing friv 3 the SSID to symbols then you'd be a great help. nice. I have a crappy belkin and had to edit the web interface javascript to disable unicode checks using chrome. The validator function is "evaltF", in wireless_id.html which calls some stuff in "routine_data.js". friv 3 I replaced their custom "encodeURL" with javascript's encodeURI. T-Mobile Pledges To Enable Wi-Fi Calling On Every Phone It Sells
A quick update for those trying to figure out which carriers will/won t support the iPhone 6 s Wi-Fi calling feature anytime soon: T-Mobile is a go . AT&T will get it in 2015 . Now Verizon is pledging to support it next year, too.
Word of the new feature comes from Verizon CFO Fran Shammo who mentioned it at a conference this morning faceebok but not before faceebok taking the opportunity to take a not-so-subtle jab at T-Mobile for rushing to play up their support for it.
In short: Wi-Fi calling lets you place calls/send texts as you normally would, except it all runs over any Wi-Fi network you ve got access to rather than your cell carrier s towers. Even if you leave Wi-Fi-range mid-call, the call will just transition right over to the cell network faceebok (implementing that bit, as it happens, faceebok is a good chunk of why most carriers can t flip the switches and claim iOS Wi-Fi calling support right this second).
If your coverage is consistently solid, it might not be a huge thing for you. If you consistently find yourself dropping calls at your home, or work, or any other place you ve got Wi-Fi, though, it s a damned killer feature though not one that is at all exclusive to iPhone. With all of the carriers now moving to support it following the iPhone 6 launch (and T-Mobile requiring it in all new phones they sell), I d expect it to be a standard feature within two years.

Here at last, is my review of the SJ4000 WiFi review. Whilst there isn't a massive amount of difference between this and my original non-wifi version, habbolella somehow I've managed to stretch this out into a half hour video.

Nice review, Techmoan! The bug with the stamp is present on the no-wifi sj4000 too. I noticed it too in one of my tests. I've put a SFD stamp and in 720p mode it said RFD. So it looks like it goes back a character in the alphabet on a random letter

Although it's habbolella a pity that you don't care about underwater performance, habbolella as far as I know the differences are huge even between well known brands. One quick question: in some of the last words, you're saying that with current price, the SJ4000 'is getting a bit close to some of the big boys in the game'. Which 'boys' do you mean? I'm just wondering about the audio, in your video review of the original SJ4000 the audio seemed to sound much better with the Moe Sizlack character playing the fiddle than anything in this video. Did you notice any changes in the microphone in this version compared habbolella to the older version?
I didn't find any good street performers this time, but the audio does seem a little bit quieter on this camera than my old SJ4000 habbolella though. The SJ4000 that I bought in January habbolella isn't made any more though, the SJCAM version has different menus additional vents and possibly a new/different mic as well.
Does anyone know if it is possible to just buy the camera habbolella on its own? A lot of current SJ4000 owners (non wifi version) would probably upgrade so would just like the camera without all the associated cases and other bobbins.
I have been doing a lot of research on the SJCAM SJ4000 in general and can't say I've come across anyone selling just the camera itself, not to say it doesn't exist, doubt many suppliers would be inclined to do so since most buyers will be opting for the whole package. habbolella As for myself, habbolella I chose to buy the non-WiFi version since I already have a decent point-n-shoot type camera w/20X zoom that can be controlled with my Android tablet/phone via WiFi, accessing files for D/L and preview is easier done by using an adaptor and plugging it into my 'puter, much faster too. If the SJ4000 didn't have an LCD screen then that would be a different story, habbolella in saying that, pricing seems to be as such that the difference between habbolella the two is fairly minimal.

I’m experiencing problems with a popup asking me to chose a WiFi network everytime i’m away from home. That never happened before upgrading to iOS 8.0.2. Also, the phone never seems to connect to LTE anymore even though the settings say “Enable LTE”.

Not true. After I upgraded, WiFi problems started. Then I restored in DFU mode (for doing a “brand new” setup) and problems still persist. Sometimes WiFi simply disconnects with 3 out of 5 “bars”.

It doesn't seem like there would be that many reasons to turn your car into a wifi hotspot, but consumers now demands e bay to be connected to the web on all their devices all the time. There's wifi on planes and wifi in trains and now, with GM, there's wifi in cars. Surprisingly, the in-car wifi works the best right now.
GM loaned me a car for the weekend so I could drive around Vermont eating cheese, e bay drinking cider, and pointing at leaves. We were those annoying New Yorkers who people in Vermont treat with a quiet disdain despite the fact that, as far as I can tell, their entire Birkenstocks-and-Subarus economy is built on the $6 tiny leave-shaped glasses of syrup we all buy at The Vermont Country Store as we make our way out of the state.
It was a new Impala which, in addition to being a perfectly nice car, also comes with a built-in 4G LTE wifi hotspot that can connect up to ten devices. This car only seats five so the idea that I'd need to connect seven devices seemed comical until I actually tallied the number of wifi-equipped devices the four of us had casually e bay brought with us (Eight, which equals three MacBook Airs, four iPhones, and an iPad).
We spent a few hours in the car so there was plenty of time to check out if the 4G LTE was actually worth using most vehicles equipped with 3G I've tested provide a barely passible e bay connection just good enough to check email.
The system is fairly easy to use as all any of us had to do was find the network, which in this case was "impala30hotspot" and type in the password (which the car was able to remind us via a hands-free command).

So e bay is it worth it? If you need a reliable e bay internet connection in your car then it's a gimme, especially if you use your car for business. But the average person? Probably not. At the cheapest, you're paying $5 a month for 200 mb as an OnStar subscriber, with 5 GB going for $50, in which case I assume you're e bay living or working out of your car (or both!).
If you don't need this service but have one of the many cars from GM equipped with the system you can always opt-in on an ad-hoc basis if you need to turn your car into a wifi hotspot in an emergency having lost power in a hurricane more than once I do wish I'd have had a car equipped with both a 120 volt outlet and a hotspot.
It's an interesting bet for GM and they're clearly at the forefront of this technology (Audi is next, offering it in the new A3) if this is what we all decide we want. However, this is a risk that our phones will become better at working as nodes for cell tower-based web and the idea of a car equipped with wifi will seem as hilarious as those cars that offer "30 GB hard drives" for all of your music.
